If I'm performing Audio Cleanup on string quartets is it safe to turn Brass Protection off?

What about if there are piano and strings?

No horns in either case.

Paul Sanders (AlpineSoft)

Hi,

Your ears need to be the guide really, plus if you zoom in on a BP marker in the waveform display that might tell you something.  Why, is VinylStudio missing clicks?

SunCityMikey

Well with Brass Protection set to the default, many clicks are excluded. I'm digitizing old LP's (circa late 1950's - mid 1960's); some are even (gak) mono. It's not unusual for several thousand clicks to be ignored due to brass protection. I've turned off brass protection, the clicks are repaired, and the music sounds good to me. I'm asking the theoretical question: how does brass protection help me if the music I'm digitizing has no horns?

Paul Sanders (AlpineSoft)

It can protect against rasping sounds in general.  The synth in the Eurythmics' Sweet Dreams is a case in point.  But if you don't have any of those then you should be fine.

Thanks, Paul. I appreciate your fine product.
