No recording from SPDIF out

So, I have VS source set to SPDIF Out on sound card.  That is also the digital connection to my AVR.  I can hear the music from my system, but when I record I get silence.  Is that not how it's supposed to work?

I got it working.  Found this in my Yamaha doc:

• Digital signals input at the DIGITAL INPUT jacks are not output at the analog AUDIO OUT (REC) jacks for recording.


I was using a digital source.  Once I put a record on the turntable, an analog source, all was well.

And, the SPDIF was NOT the recording input.  I was looking at the wrong item.  Input at Line In.
