Hi,

It's been awhile since I've needed to post, which shows the strength of VinylStudio, and also my infrequent use (only 83 albums converted).   Firstly, some accolades - great product.  I have been using VS since its release on the Mac. The effort the developer has applied to VS's interface, manual and pop up windows is superb.  I noted another mac user likening it to the mac only app 'Reunion' - which is an excellent comparison to another great mac product.  Besides being an easy product to use, VS support documents and forum are as good as Reunion.  The only thing missing that would add to ease of use are short videos showing features - like Reunion does to ease you over the learning hump.  While researching I did note only one youtube video showing how to use Vinyl Studio, and it is fairly recent:
http://youtu.be/OB1vlAFd5Mc
While not by AlpineSoft the video is quite  good, but ends at the 'Record' tab.  Unfortunately, the elegance of VS occurs in the remaining four tabs. Any chance of youtube videos on those features?

My questions relates to two settings  in the 'Scan for Clicks' window.
I've noted VS v8.5+ has a lot more options regarding RIAA equalisation, which had me question my workflow.
Workflow - 'Recording needs equalisation'  Selection
If I have a preamp with a filter that has options 'Low cut' or 'Flat'.  Is it best to record 1960 - 90 vinyl with the preamp's filter OFF ie 'Flat' and use the 'Recording needs equalisation' in VinylStudio to achieve better click removal?
The help manual note appears to imply the best path to follow is turn 'OFF'/'FLAT' the preamp filter, then do click removal.  Is that a correct interpretation?  And then apply RIAA equalisation in VS?
The note's wording in VS is as follows:
Note: if (and only if) you recorded with a 'flat' phono preamp, or if you applied only inverse RIAA equalisation at record time, you should check the 'Recording needs equalisation' box. This will greatly improve the accuracy of VinylStudio's click scanner. Do not check this box if you are recording an old 'acoustic' disc (i.e. one which requires no equalisation in the first place). In that case, just apply inverse RIAA at record time if you cannot defeat the RIAA equalisation built into your phono preamp and scan for clicks using the default settings.

Is setting the preamp filter to 'Low Cut' ie 'ON' another was of saying you are applying RIAA equalisation?

Nomenclature  'Scan Entire File' Radio Button.
Could the current wording be replaced to 'Scan Entire Album Side' like the wording in the RIAA equalisation FFT Filter?
Because, like a vinyl record, and for ease of re-recording if needed, I record both sides of an album separately,  I misunderstood 'Scan Entire File' to mean the album.
In the 'Scan for Clicks' tab I gather the wording 'Scan Entire File' means 'Side #' where # is the album's side number.

Thanks again.

regards
Diana

Hi,

Thank you for your post.

It makes little difference whether you enable RIAA equalisation (which is indeed the same as 'Low cut') in your preamp or in VinylStudio.  In particular, the click detector is just as effective in either instance.  Just make sure you set the 'recording needs equalisation' box correctly (i.e. check it if you recorded with RIAA equalisation in your preamp disabled).

We will consider your other suggestions, thank you.

Update:  We finally got to the bottom of this, and the problem is fixed in V8.6.3:
