Is there a way to retire a Side recording, but not delete it?

If I do a recording, but then I don't like the recording for some reason and I want to redo it, is there a way to replace the recording with a new recording without overwriting or deleting the first recording? So far what I have been doing is recording to Side 2 (and so on) and shifting the track breaks. But is there a way to record Side 1 again but keep the previous Side 1 (just deactivate it from being used)?

Easiest way is probably to re-record as side 2 and then re-order the recordings in the Split Tracks window (you can drag them up and down).
